Improved help for renters from the Ministry of Social Development

We’ve improved how we help with bond, rent in advance, rent arrears and moving costs. Previously, there were more limits on how we could help.

We’ve improved how we help with bond, rent in advance, rent arrears and moving costs. Previously, there were more limits on how we could help.

In mid-March we introduced changes to ensure our financial support better reflects actual housing costs. We increased maximum payment amounts and the number of times people can get help in a year and updated our eligibility criteria. We also updated our Transition to Alternative Housing Grant and Tenancy Cost Cover to offer better support in the current housing market.

These changes apply to people who are named tenants on tenancies that the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 applies to.

People can visit the Work and Income website to find out more about what support is available.

People can also use our online ‘Check what you might get’ guide to find out what payments they might be able to get from us. Visit the Work and Income website and click on Check what you might get, https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/.

Also attached is our Housing Support Products factsheet to share with your teams to help them understand these payments and how they may be useful to people you work with.

We’ve also updated our ‘Help with housing’ brochure which explains how we can help with housing and other essential costs. If you want to order copies, please see your local Work and Income service centre.
