Nelson City Council’s Rethink Waste Whakaarohia annual waste minimisation grants programme opens on 26 February and closes on 5 April. Up to $40,000 is available (minimum $2,000, maximum $10,000 per project), for community-led projects which avoid or reduce waste.

Nelson City Council’s Rethink Waste Whakaarohia annual waste minimisation grants programme opens on 26 February and closes on 5 April. Up to $40,000 is available (minimum $2,000, maximum $10,000 per project), for community-led projects which avoid or reduce waste.
Examples of projects previously funded include:
• Establishing a Victory Community compost hub
• Supporting a construction sector alliance to reduce building waste
• Extending the ‘Recycle a Device’ secondary school project
• Creating a reusable birthday party kit for loan through a toy library
• Developing local capacity to provide advice on deconstruction of buildings
• Launching an app to reduce food waste in the hospitality industry
• Supporting schools to divert food waste
Applicants are requested to read the guidelines on our website which include information on criteria, and examples of previously successful projects. Council staff are available to provide feedback if applicants wish to check in before putting together an application (this is recommended for projects seeking over $5000 to ensure activities fit the criteria).
