Epilepsy New Zealand – Events to mark Epilepsy Purple Day

This short article is about Epilepsy New Zealand and Purple Day on Tuesday the 26th of March 2024. It explains what Purple Day is, how you can get involved and what events are being held in the Tasman/Nelson region.


Even though epilepsy is one of the most common brain disorders across the world, there is still a lot of misunderstanding about what epilepsy is and what it is like to live with.

According to the Neurology Foundation, 45,000 – 50,000 New Zealanders have epilepsy (approximately 1% to 2% of the population). Epilepsy occurs regardless of age, gender, cultural or socio-economic background. Epilepsy can develop at any stage of life, but it is more common in children, adolescents, and people over 60.

Purple Day will be celebrated globally on Tuesday the 26th of March 2024. Similar to Pink Shirt Day or Daffodil Day, Purple Day is a fun way to raise awareness and raise funds to support those living with epilepsy.

On Saturday the 23rd of March Epilepsy New Zealand will be at Mitre 10, Nelson, hosting a sausage Sizzle! This is a great opportunity to meet your local epilepsy Educator Theresa Kidd-Foley. Please drop by to say Kia Ora, buy a sausage and support people living with epilepsy.

For people living in Richmond, Epilepsy New Zealand will be using the Community Display space, in Richmond Library from the 18th until the 31st of March 2024. The aim is to raise awareness of epilepsy in our community. if you’re in the area and want to learn more about epilepsy, please stop by.

On Purple Day, Tuesday the 26th of March 2024, Epilepsy New Zealand will be at the Elma Turner Library in Nelson. Please come on over if you’re passing. Most of us have met someone living with epilepsy but may not have known it. let’s raise our knowledge and awareness in our community.
