Freshfm radio is calling for new programme makers – no experience needed!
Freshfm is looking to diversify its programmes and for more people – individual volunteers and organisations – from our Top of the South community to help create them!
What is your special interest or message you would like to share with others in our community? Are they issues that affect our world and community, words of inspiration or topics that people may not know much about? Are they intended for our youth or for people nearing 100? Radio is a wonderful way to reach your audience – be they at home, in their car, overseas, or perhaps on bed rest. And you can be any age and represent any minority or majority group. Most of our programmes are pre-recorded, so you don’t have to worry about making mistakes, and you also don’t have to have any experience, because we can teach you what you need to know about making great shows and podcasts!
Who we are and what we do:
Freshfm is a radio station representing the Top of the South Island and hosts programmes by, for and about the community. We are a not-for-profit charitable trust funded by NZ On Air, grants, donations and local business sponsorships, providing a platform for the diverse voices of our community. Our vision is to reflect the aspirations, creativity, and stories of the people in Te Tau Ihu, the Top of The South, and share them globally through our broadcast and online services. All our programmes are accessible through freshfm.net or accessmedia.nz.
We have three studios in Tākaka, Motueka and Nelson – and have over 55 volunteer programme makers across the region using these studios to create shows that span content from youth, culture, minority languages, climate change, and local arts and music, health and wellbeing, and much more.
What do you get out of it?
Community radio is the heartbeat of our local area, amplifying diverse voices and stories. Celebrating our unique culture, your involvement makes a real impact every day, ensuring our community is heard and valued. We offer support for your show development through workshops and guidance on growing your audience, improving interview and production skills, creating great podcasts, and mastering social media. You will gain valuable experience in broadcasting, audio production, and public speaking. These skills will not only enhance your personal growth but also look great on your CV. You’ll work with passionate volunteers and experienced professionals in a supportive environment who are dedicated to making a difference.
Curious about programme making or supporting Freshfm in other ways?
Whether you are an individual volunteer or a local organisation, we would love to help you start your own radio programme. We are also looking for more businesses who would like to sponsor local community radio so we can get more local voices and content on air.
