Volunteering: A great way to connect, contribute and belong
For people who are new to Aotearoa New Zealand, volunteering can be a great way to meet people, build confidence and feel part of the community.
Volunteering can offer much more than the chance to give your time. It can help you:
- Meet new people and make friends from different backgrounds
- Practise English and learn new words and everyday Kiwi expressions
- Gain New Zealand work experience and develop skills for your CV
- Build references and local connections that can help when looking for paid work
- Learn how things work in Aotearoa New Zealand, including workplace and community culture
- Share your own skills, knowledge and culture with others
- Try something new and discover interests or career pathways
- Feel more connected and confident in your new community.
Opening pathways into volunteering
During July–September 2026, Volunteer Nelson connected with people who are new to New Zealand through outreach sessions with English Language Partners students and Multicultural Nelson Tasman.
The sessions introduced participants to volunteering in Aotearoa New Zealand and showcased some of the ways they can connect with their local community, including Volunteer Nelson’s Volunteer Drop-in Library sessions, Wellby Talking Cafés and the Found Directory.
There was a high level of interest and engagement, with some participants also taking part in one-on-one sessions to explore volunteer opportunities suited to their interests, skills and goals.
For newcomers, volunteering can be a first step towards building a network, gaining experience, practising language skills and finding a sense of belonging in their new community.
