The Kawenata Signing: A Commitment to Kotahitanga

The recent Te Tauihu Kawenata signing ceremony was a significant milestone, bringing together for-purpose organisations, iwi, and community leaders to affirm our shared values of kotahitanga, manaakitanga, and collective action. The event, held at the marae, was a reflection of the deep relationships and commitment growing across our region.

Following the ceremony, organisations have already begun embedding the Kawenata into their ways of working. One for-purpose organisation shared:

“Yesterday at our meeting, we agreed to keep the Kawenata as a standing agenda item to ensure our commitment remains fresh and relevant. We’ll discuss action points to deepen our community relationships, commitment to kotahitanga, and collective action. Very soon, we will also be planting our gifted kōwhai tree as a gesture to reinforce that strong relationships, like trees, require care, patience, and the right conditions to grow.”

Another said:

“I have spoken to the staff who attended, and they said it was inspiring and a wonderful thing to be involved in. Congratulations to all who made it happen!”

And an attendees shared :

“Thank you for your Manaakitanga at yesterday’s Kawenata signing ceremony. It was a lovely event, and I wish you all the best with this commitment and may the momentum continue, and Te Tauihu Community Development Agency grows in strength.”
