Child Matters and Community Networks Aotearoa are jointly delivering a nationwide roadshow providing presentations to volunteers and volunteering organisations. This roadshow will provide education and information to those in the volunteering and community sectors to assist in understanding roles and responsibilities when engaging with children and provide access to resources to assist in developing safe child protection systems and environments.

The workshop is aimed at existing and new governance board/committee members of voluntary and community organisations. The workshop will cover:

• what is governance & why good governance is important
• the responsibilities of a governing body (including legal requirements)
• the relationship between a manager (paid or volunteer) and governing board/committee – who is responsible for what
• how to participate effectively and the importance of building governance capacity for the voluntary and community sector

The workshop is led by Mary Curnow who has been working in the not-for-profit sector in NZ and the UK for the last 20 years or so as a volunteer, manager and trustee. Over the last 7 years, she has been actively involved in governance for a couple of organisations in Nelson and believes passionately that good governance is the foundation on which healthy, progressive and sustainable organisations are built. The cost for the workshop is $37.50 +gst. Part 1 – Understanding Financial Statements – Tues 24 October 5.30 – 7pm

Dazzled or confused by financial statements?  Let Bill Heritage of Tupiza Ltd remove the mystery.

• Financial language explained
• The balance sheet made clear
• Other financial statements
• Common confusions
• The law and financial reporting

Do bring along your own accounts.  There will be time for questions about matters that affect you.

Part 2 – Financial Management – Tues 31 October 5.30 – 7pm

How to use financial information to make decisions for your organisation.

• The manager’s role in finance
• Budgeting
• Monthly versus annual financial statements
• What to look for
• Fraud detection

Bill Heritage has been a qualified accountant and educator for almost 40 years.  He has lectured to student accountants, to qualified accountants and many other groups.  Bill has developed a tremendous ability to explain complex ideas simply.  He is famous for delivering humour with even the driest topic.

The course will be held at NMIT Room S106. To view a map of the campus go here. If entering from Nile Street, there is an older style Villa at the front of this small block and Room S106 entrance is on the left hand side of that building.

Volunteer Nelson provide low-cost training at the rate of $15 per hour+gst to organisations. This helps to enable us to fund the ongoing support we provide to volunteer involving organisations.

Strong, skilled and resilient governance is an important driver for healthy communities. This event explores the issues and opportunities for the governance of community groups in Nelson/Tasman.

Nelson/Tasman combined Community and Whanau meetings and the Social Services Sector Scan commissioned by Rātā Foundation have indicated that there is an unmet need in terms of governance development here in Nelson/Tasman, and that the incredible experience and knowledge in the sector is not always evenly spread.

In answer to this call, Rātā Foundation and Nelson City Council, working with the Department of Internal Affairs and Volunteer Nelson commissioned Brigid Ryan and Esmé Palliser to research the issues and strengths as they relate to governance of community organisations in the Nelson Tasman region. The researchers interviewed 40 people who are either chairs of community organisations or managers who report to boards. The research has been anonymous, with the researchers covering a representative sample of community organisations.

You are invited to hear what we have found out and to share your expertise and your ideas about how we can progress from here. Together, we hope we can gain further clarity about the issues we face and the resources at our disposal and ultimately, how we can improve our communities.

This event is open to board members and managers reporting to boards of community organisations in the Nelson Tasman Region.

Developing meaningful roles for volunteers

A half day workshop facilitated by Rob Jackson from the UK.

Developing roles for volunteers is an aspect of volunteer management that gets little attention compared to the more popular topics of recruitment and selection. Yet without well designed, meaningful and motivating volunteer roles, it is often much harder to get and keep volunteers. This workshop will provide a method – and outline the key issues to consider – for developing such volunteer roles.

The workshop will be followed by a light lunch and the opportunity to network with other  Volunteer Managers.

This is a professional development opportunity for volunteer managers across the Top of the South.

For those of you who didn’t get the opportunity to meet with Rob Jackson during his 2015 NZ tour, Rob is one of the leading authorities on volunteering in the world. Rob has helped shape the strategic direction for Volunteering England as well as writing, speaking and training on volunteer programme management for over 20 years.
