Home Share for Her: Our origin story
Home Share for Her was nurtured into being by women who understand how important it is to have a safe, secure home and feel connected. In 2022 Community Action Nelson (CAN) ran a ‘What is a Home exhibition’, a series of workshops and talks that aimed to tackling the housing crisis in Nelson Tasman. During this series it became very evident to three women that the greater proportion of those struggling to find suitable and affordable accommodation were women and that half of those living alone were older women, some struggling to maintain a larger home, some needing help in the home and some experiencing financial hardship and loneliness. With the lack of smaller homes and more cost-effective options, the women put their ideas, shared experiences and resources together and in 2023, with the support of Community Action Nelson and Nelson’s Women Centre, Home Share for Her Trust was born. The idea behind the Trust is to provide a safe place for women to connect with each other to find and share homes and make social connections. The website portal – www.homeshareforher.nz -gives women the tools to talk to each other, make connections and offer each other affordable home sharing solutions. These are women who can work together to turn things around for themselves and actively grow strong, mutually beneficial relationships with secure foundations. While it is not a service for women in crisis, the website enables independent like-minded women to find affordable accommodation solutions which, in turn, will help reduce some of the pressure on the public housing system. Our trustees and founders are very excited about the growth of the Trust and hopeful of the concept growing into other regions of Aotearoa New Zealand.
How HomeShareforHer.nz works…
The website has step-by-step resources and guides to help Home Owners and Home Seekers through the process of uploading their profiles, connecting and communicating with each other, doing reference checks and setting up sharing agreements. A Home Owner could be someone who has a room or a section of their home they would like to share with another woman – a Home Seeker. Home Seekers can register their housing needs, view home spaces available, and also connect with other Home Seekers directly to hunt for a home together. Sharing could also take the form of sharing some chores in lieu of part or all of the rent – it is something home sharers can work out together as part of their sharing agreement.
