Since September 2021, Centre for Asia Pacific Refugee Studies in collaboration with the Asylum Seeker Support Trust (ASST) has been documenting the significant needs of people seeking asylum in Aotearoa New Zealand. We’ve considered (i) how they fare during their applications and (ii) the ongoing challenges faced by those granted refugee status. Safe Start, Fair Future is the result of this research, which you can read, in full, here.
If you and your organisation would like to support the report’s recommendations, please complete this form with your email and include the name of the organisation that you represent to. We’re also happy to accept individual support.
In early May, CAPRS and ASST co-hosted an event at Parliament to launch this report with an incredible panel of speakers and the support of Labour MPs Ibrahim Omer, Vanushi Walters, and Phil Twyford. We want to maintain this positive momentum and show that the wider sector strongly supports ensuring all asylum seekers are given a safe start, and all convention refugees are given equal access to services.
Next month CAPRS is planning a virtual forum to further this important discussion. The online forum will be held on Thursday 16 June. We will be joined by a panel of speakers including community representatives and Members of Parliament. If you would like to know more about the event, add your email here and we will share the event details with you soon.
We are excited about the potential for this work to make a real difference in the lives of those who seek protection in Aotearoa New Zealand. We greatly welcome your support to make this happen.
