Erika & CoCo Flash are bringing their Rainbow Storytime and Living Library sessions to Nelson! Rainbow Storytime is a chance to hear books about acceptance, diversity, inclusion and being kind, play some fun games and meet some fabulous drag queens with plenty of colours and glitter! Open to children of all ages. Living Library is designed around learning about how the duo became Erika & Coco, how they identify and is a chance to ask any questions you have about the LGBTQIA+ community.
For those who passed by the main entrance to our Habitat Hub, you would have seen the usual Buzz room taken over by many blue bags. Fifeshire Foundation was excited to share the space to prepare bags for 400 families with 1000 children this year. This amazing non-for-profit organization was created 25 years ago as a response to families who need help when the usual government services were not able to assist them.
This year Milestone Homes and Media Works has partnered up with Fifeshire Foundation to raise over $60k for the Big Give 2021 to fill those bags with treats, food, gifts, food and gift vouchers or activity vouchers (ten pin bowling, pro carts, mini golf and the aquatic centre among others). It took Leanne Churchill, the Foundation manager, and her 50 volunteers nearly 3 weeks to sort and pack them. Social agencies and families have been picking up those bags last week.
The Hub Christmas Tea
One of our Hub tenants, Top of the South Neighbourhood Support (TSNS), organized a small Christmas tea for all tenants in the common Hub area. It was a small get-together but it meant so much for them to celebrate the Christmas spirit as a community.
Maree from TSNS shares: “It is fantastic working in an environment with like-minded organisations, vibrantly doing their best to support our community. Communities connect through kai, in the shared growing, harvesting, preparing of, and eating. We felt a great way to thank the wonderful Habitat Hub neighbours, that welcomed us so warmly, was to share a morning tea, with a Christmas theme. It was our small meaalofa – a gift prepared and given with love – to Habitat for Humanity, Restore, Nook, Accounting for Good, Good Loans, Nelson Foodbank and Volunteer Nelson.”
