Young people from across Nelson Tasman are getting together at a forum to help them connect with and support the region’s Covid 19 response.
Young Change Makers is presented by Nelson Youth Events (with support from Volunteer Nelson and funding from Nelson City Council) to get more young people into governance and leadership in the community sector.
This is their second annual event and will be addressed by MP Golriz Ghahraman, an Iranian-born former child asylum seeker, UN lawyer and the first refugee elected to New Zealand’s Parliament.
Event organiser Holly Drummond from Volunteer Nelson says Ms Ghahraman will be supported by local young change makers who will give insight into economic, social and environmental challenges and opportunities facing young people in the Covid-impacted world. There will also be facilitated workshops to look further at solutions, opportunities and ways to get involved.
Drummond knows first-hand the impact young people can have on building resilient communities.
“Anyone can be a change maker – it’s about harnessing what you’re most passionate about, and seeking opportunities that allow you to create positive change,” she said. “We’re fortunate in Nelson with our fantastic lineup of local young leaders that are at the forefront of the making our region a better place for all.”
Drummond named Johny O’Donnell, entrepreneur and business consultant who heads up the Project Kōkori engagement programme; Rohan O’Neill-Stevens, environmental activist and the youngest elected Nelson City Councilor; Zoe Palmer, youth advocate and campaigner; Ben Bushell, environmentalist and entrepreneur; and Sophie Weenink Smith, organiser of a successful beach clean-up last year.
Nelson Young Change Makers is free to attend with registrations taken through participating high schools. Young people not attending school can register directly through Volunteer Nelson, by emailing [email protected] The event is suitable for students in years 10-13.
