Nelson’s non-profit community groups can now apply for a helping hand from Nelson City Council’s Community Investment Fund.
What do our Nelson candidates know about our sector? What are their plans to address housing affordability, mental health and poverty?
For many years in Nelson CAN (Community Action Network) has offered election forums (national & local) with a focus on community sector issues.
We have invited the Nelson parliamentary candidates to part of a panel at the August meeting of Community & Whanau. As this meeting will be of wider interest we’re keen for you to invite others from your workplace or networks.
The panel will be chaired by Mary Ellen O’Connor. We will give each of candidate TWO MINUTES to speak on their understanding of the issues facing the sector, and we will then take questions from the floor. We would expect these to focus on health services (particularly mental health), housing affordability, growing inequality and poverty…so get your thinking caps on!
There will be an opportunity for you to chat informally to candidates over lunch.
Date – August 12
Time – 12 – 1.30pm
Community Action Network is a group of women with many years of experience in Nelson’s community health and social service sector. Believing strongly that Social Equity Matters we work to:
• identify emerging and major issues in the community sector and set about getting them fixed, or into the public eye; and to influence decision makers to encourage action for better social outcomes.
Currently we are opening What is a Home? on the corner of Hardy and Collingwood sts, to encourage conversation about affordable housing. Drop in on Tuesdays 12 – 2 and join us on Facebook for details of talks every Thursday 12 – 2pm.
