A new project to strengthen the local youth events scene is about to get underway. This involves event management training and work alongside local industry professionals for 45 young people.
There are 30 young people involved in learning about and volunteering with emergency services as part of the Youth in Emergency Services Programmes in Nelson and Tasman.
There are a group of 20 Young Leaders who are in the process of completing a Level 3 Qualification in Youth Work. They learn about leadership and groups, social work, mentoring, project planning and risk management. We then mentor them to run or supporting the running of a volunteering project involving a further 20 young volunteers. Examples of these projects have been setting up volunteering groups in schools, running a fundraiser for a charity such as a clothing sale, sausage sizzle and raffle or running an event which brings young people together.
Some of the young people who completed last year’s programmes are involved again this year and are able to share their experiences, help mentor and deliver training. Some are volunteering or working in our local community organisations and youth work settings for example with Street Ambassadors over summer, at events, at Tahuna Community Centre and as youth board members.
