As part of a Young Leaders Programme, Youth & Community Works and Volunteer Nelson are currently running a Careerforce accredited Level 3 Youth Workers Certificate Training. This began with a week long course held at the end of January and was open to those aged 16 – 24yrs from Nelson.
Part of the programme is a youth development project to be completed by mid June which engages other young people as volunteers. The idea to is to encourage participation, active involvement in decision making etc. for all young people.
Those that are participating in the Young Leaders Programme are now working on a range of different projects, whether it is centred around people volunteering at one event or planning, organising and running their own event or finding effective ways to promote opportunities and coordinate volunteers within their school. For example there are volunteering Facebook groups and pages running at 3 schools in the region now. There has been organised participation in things like op shop sorting days, sports events and relay for life.
It is likely that a similar programme will be available in the Tasman region soon with some of the Level 3 Youth Worker Unit Standards delivered over a weekend workshop. Watch this space.
