Volunteer Position- Mentors to teach former refugees to drive

Volunteer Mentors Needed!
Help a former refugee to learn to drive – Learning to drive is important for everyone in terms of independence and access to work, for former refugees it is no different.

New Zealand Red Cross Tasman are on the lookout for 15 volunteers prepared to mentor former refugees via a new Refugee Driver Training programme that is rolling out in Nelson in March.

15 working age former refugees who already have their learner Licence, will be taught to drive over a 12-16 week period starting in March by a group of volunteer mentors. Each driver will be allocated a volunteer mentor. The mentor will themselves be trained, and will then go on to supervise their learner driver by practising in a dual control car provided for the programme. Over the programme duration both the mentors and learner will be supported by qualified driving instructor Garry Dunn of Dunn’s Training.

Interested? Mentors must be at least 20 years old and have held a current full car driver licence for at least 2 years. Ideally, you will be over 25 years old. If you meet the requirement of being a mentor and have at least 30 hours available to supervise a learner please contact RDT programme coordinator Claire Nichols at NZ Red Cross Tasman Marlborough on 548 4978 or nelsonrdtp@gmail.com

Applications must be in by 5pm on the 17th March 2016
