Refugees – Ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances
Nelson is one of 5 refugee resettlement regions in New Zealand. We welcome approximately 75 former refugees into our community every year.
World Refugee Day is held annually throughout the world on the 20th of June. On this day and the week leading up to it, Red Cross Refugee Services Nelson would like to encourage people to acknowledge and reflect on the strength and courage of the people who are forced to flee their home lands and resettle in New Zealand. We invite Nelsonians to come together to learn more about refugee resettlement in our region and to celebrate the contribution former refugees make to our community in terms of our local economy and cultural diversity. Look out for our displays around the region and join in with one or more of the activities that will be taking place between the 14th-25th June.
