Nelson Multicultural Council, in conjunction with the Nelson City Council and funding from Nelson Bays Community Fund (www.nbcf.org.nz) is holding a Tangata Te Tiriti – Treaty People workshop on Saturday 22nd March, 9a.m – 4pm Venue: Centre for Human Potential, 319 Hardy Street (opposite the main entrance of NMIT), Nelson.
This particular workshop is designed especially for migrants/ refugees by Dr. Ingrid Huygens. She herself will deliver the workshop in Nelson. The work kit she has designed to explain the concepts, has been translated into other languages, including Nepali and Burmese.
The Treaty of Waitangi is important for all New Zealanders. Maori who signed the Treaty agreed to share their country with the people who would come here later: “Treaty people, tangata Tiriti.” In order to achieve understanding and harmony, why we need to know about and respect the Treaty.
In the words of Dr Nagalingam Rasalingam, Refugee Council of New Zealand, “New Zealand is the only treaty-based country in the South Pacific and as Immigrants and Refugees in Aotearoa, New Zealand, we should be well educated about the treaty.”
There are 30 places on this workshop. 12 of those people will go on to do the two day training so that they can deliver this workshop to others in the future.
Our plan is to deliver the workshop several times per year to people new to New Zealand. Although the workshop has been designed for “migrants”, it is open to all, most especially because we are keen to encourage those who wish to become Tangata Te Tiriti – Treaty People trainers, to attend!
The two day training for trainers, will take place on Monday 24th March, 9am – 5pm and Tuesday 25th March, 9am – 4pm
The cost of the training is $25 for an individual, or $45 for someone who is supported by an agency.
