Become a Volunteer English Home Tutor for Former Refugees

Volunteer home tutors spend 1–1.5 hour each week with a learner, helping them with their English language needs. It’s hugely rewarding for both the learner and volunteer. Our next Tutor training course starts 7th March 2024

English Language Partners mission is to provide English language skills and social support for effective resettlement of adult refugees and migrants in Aotearoa New Zealand and has been operating in Nelson-Tasman for over 35 years. In 2023 we had 60 volunteer home tutors working with 106 learners. All home tutors complete a 25-hour training course before they start tutoring. The course is run two times a year, approximately 80% of our Learners are former refugees and their families. Others have come to Nelson-Tasman as immigrants. Learners come from 24 nationalities. Most are from S E Asia, largest countries of origin are Myanmar, Bhutan, Colombia and since 2022 Afghanistan and Pakistan. Learners have a range of English levels and needs. Some have virtually no English at all, others go on to study at NMIT or go to work. Learners with lower levels, who don’t have other English tuition and who can’t afford to pay for English lessons, are our priority.

Our next English Tutor Training Course starts on Thursday 7th March 2024. To register your interest and receive further information about English Language Partners and what the training entails please email [email protected] and visit www.englishlanguage.org.nz.
