Friends of the Emergency Department volunteers needed

St John is looking for new volunteers for their Friends of the Emergency Department service at Nelson Hospital. We invite people interested in this role to come along to an information session on Thursday 24 September at 5.30pm. Venue: Stoke Baptist Church, 648 Main Road, Stoke.

New volunteers  are needed for the St John Friends of the Emergency Department service at Nelson Hospital.

The primary function of Friends the Emergency Department (FEDs) is to provide comfort, information and non-clinical support to patients (and their families/friends), who are undergoing or awaiting treatment in the Nelson Hospital Emergency Department.

We are looking for men and women who are compassionate and committed to helping people.  Listening to the patients and relatives is one of the most important parts of this role, as is maintaining patient and staff confidentiality. FED volunteers are very empathetic and need to adapt to each patient or relative’s situation – this may meaning being calm, gentle and or using their sense of humour.

FED volunteers cover 16 four-hour shifts at Nelson Hospital Emergency Department each week, including weekends.  Each shift is covered by one volunteer, who supports busy Emergency Department staff, by ensuring patients and their families are comfortable and reassured while they wait for treatment.

FED volunteers complete a selection process and comprehensive training prior to working in the Emergency department.

People interested in this volunteer role are invited to attend an information evening on Thursday 24 September at 5.30pm. Venue: Stoke Baptist Church, 648 Main Road, Stoke (next to McCashins).
