Matariki at Nelson Public Libraries

Matariki celebrations at Elma Turner Libraries: Wednesday 17th June–Friday 17th July 2015


Matariki celebrates the Maori New Year – the first new moon following the rising of Matariki (or Pleiades). Nelson Public Libraries is celebrating with ongoing displays, and the following events at Elma Turner Library.

  • Plant and seed exchange: June 17 – 17 July
  • Make a homemade kontiki: June 19, 11.30-1
  • Painting and collage: June 19,  1.30-3
  • Wai Maori – catch & release tuna etc.: June 22,  10-2
  • Maori themed cooking demonstration with Wayne duBerry of Comida: June 23,  12 noon
  • Weaving flax flowers and making poi: June 24, 12-12.30.
  • Rongoa Maori – plants for healing and health: June 25, 10-12
  • Mirimiri – Maori massage: June 26, 10-12
  • Hinaki and net making with harakeke: July 3, 11-3
  • Kite making:  July 6, 11.30-1
  • Make a flax waka, flute & windmill: July 8, 2-3
  • Project Maitai and Nelson Nature: July 16, 10.30-12
