The mission of the Personal Advocacy Trust is to support, advocate and encourage the independence of its members who have intellectual disabilities. The PA Trust was established in 1967 by a group of parents who had family members with an intellectual disability.
The aim was to provide peace of mind for parents so that they could be assured that somebody would be keeping a watchful eye over their family member for the rest of their lives, once the parents had died, to ensure their welfare and well being was the best it could be
The PA Trust is a registered charity that does not rely on government funding. Families pay a membership fee to cover the on-going cost of advocacy for their family member.
The position would suit someone with some experience in working with people with intellectual disabilities who has a passion for ensuring they are getting the best life they can.
It involves liaising with families, with agencies who provide services for members such as IHC and DSS, working with other groups such as Rescare to provide a voice for members and providing regular contact with members.
The position is part-time and very flexible. It involves also recruiting and managing volunteers who work directly with the clients.
