Re-Write of the Social Security Act

The Cabinet Paper gives more background to the thinking behind Paula Bennett’s announcement. A shift in the Social Security Act from what government ‘has to do’ to what it ‘may do’ would indicate a major step in the current government’s dismantling of the legislative requirement to assist vulnerable people. Thus social ‘security’ would be at the whim of the government of the day, instead of a basic right under the law.
